The 13-day expedition offers an immersive journey through the heart of Southern Xinjiang, a land of dramatic contrasts and ancient Silk Road history. Traveling from the gateway city of Korla to the vibrant cultural hub of Kashgar, we will traverse vast deserts, explore towering mountain ranges, and delve into the rich tapestry of Uyghur and Tajik cultures. It is a journey for travelers seeking a blend of natural wonders, historical depth, and authentic cultural encounters, from the golden poplar forests to the breathtaking peaks of the Pamir Plateau.
Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival in Korla
We will greet you at Korla Airport and provide a private transfer to the hotel for check-in. After a long journey, we recommend taking the evening to rest and acclimatise. Korla is the gateway to southern Xinjiang, known for its fragrant pears and rich Uyghur culture. No activities are scheduled for today, just relax or take a gentle stroll nearby is recommended.

Day 2 Korla Luobu People Village – Lop Nur Wetland – Luntai
Today we will visit Luobu People Village, where you will learn about the unique fishing and reed house traditions of the Luobu people, descendants of the ancient Loulan kingdom. Afterwards, we will explore Lop Nur National Wetland Park, a surprising oasis in the desert with abundant birdlife. We then drive to Luntai, a small town famous for its poplar forests, and check into our hotel for the night.

Day 3 Luntai – Tarim Poplar Forest – Kuqa Old Street – Kuqa
Today we will enter the Tarim Poplar Forest, one of the world's largest natural poplar reserves. You will see golden leafed trees (in season) standing tall against the desert backdrop. In the afternoon, we are going to wander along Kuqa Old Street, lined with traditional Uyghur houses and bustling bazaars. The ancient city of Kuqa was a key stop on the Silk Road, and its rich history is visible everywhere.

Day 4 Kuqa – Wensu Grand Canyon – Aksu
We will drive to Wensu Grand Canyon, a stunning red rock formation carved by wind and water over millennia. We will take a hike through its narrow ravines, marveling at the dramatic cliffs and unique geological layers. The canyon offers excellent photo opportunities at every turn. After the tour, we will continue to Aksu, a thriving city on the northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert. You may explore the local night market in the evening.

Day 5 Aksu – Kashgar
We will travel to Kashgar, the heart of Uyghur culture. Our first stop is the famous Century old Teahouse, where you can sip aromatic tea while listening to local musicians play the rawap. Then we are going to visit Id Kah Mosque, the largest mosque in China, with its beautiful yellow tiled architecture and peaceful courtyard. The surrounding square is lively with vendors and families. We will then check into our hotel in Kashgar.

Day 6 Kashgar – Baisha Lake – Karakul Lake – Taheman Tree Tunnel – Tashkurgan
We will drive along the Karakoram Highway, one of the world's highest paved roads. Our first stop is Baisha Lake, with its white sand dunes and turquoise water. We continue to Karakul Lake, where you will see the reflection of Muztagh Ata (the "Father of Ice Mountains") on the crystal clear surface. Afterwards, we pass through the Taheman Tree Tunnel, a photogenic avenue of old willows. We arrive in Tashkurgan in the evening.

Day 7 Tashkurgan – Panlong Ancient Road – Bandir Blue Lake – Tajik Home Visit – Tashkurgan
Today we conquer the Panlong Ancient Road, a winding mountain pass with over 600 hairpin bends, a thrilling drive with spectacular vistas. We will then visit Bandir Blue Lake, a hidden gem with vivid blue water nestled among grey mountains. In the afternoon, we will visit a local Tajik family to experience their warm hospitality, taste homemade dairy products, and learn about their unique customs. We return to Tashkurgan for the night.

Day 8 Tashkurgan – Muztagh Glacier Park – Glacier No. 4 – Kashgar
We will visit Muztagh Glacier Park, where you can get up close to the towering Muztagh Ata peak. We are going to hike to Glacier No. 4, an accessible ice formation with stunning blue crevasses. The crisp mountain air and panoramic views are truly unforgettable. After the excursion, we will drive back to Kashgar along the Karakoram Highway, enjoying the changing landscapes. We will leave you the evening free to explore Kashgar's old city at your own pace.

Day 9 Kashgar – Shache
We will travel to Shache (Yarkand), an ancient oasis town on the Silk Road. Our first stop is the Tomb of Yarkand Khan, a magnificent mausoleum complex. We will visit the Intangible Cultural Heritage Expo Park, where you can see traditional crafts like wood carving, embroidery, and felt making. We will also pay respects at the Amannisa Khan Memorial Tomb, dedicated to the famous 16th century musician and poet. Overnight in Shache.

Day 10 Shache – Zepu Jinhuyang National Forest Park – Shache
We will drive to Zepu Jinhuyang National Forest Park, a vast poplar forest along the Yarkand River. We are going to stroll through the golden (in season) tree groves and enjoy a picnic by the water. In the afternoon, we return to Shache and explore the Old Town Kazanqi District, famous for its traditional copper and iron workshops. In the evening, we will visit Subi Night Market to sample local Uyghur snacks and experience the lively atmosphere.

Day 11 Shache – Kashgar Old City
We will travel back to Kashgar and spend the day exploring the enchanting Kashgar Old City. The Old City is a living museum of Silk Road heritage. We are going to wander through its maze like alleys, lined with mud brick houses, bustling markets, and artisan workshops. You will see coppersmiths, woodcarvers, and carpet weavers at work. Enjoy the day by simply soaking in the vibrant Uyghur culture.

Day 12 Kashgar Old City
Today is entirely free for you to explore Kashgar at your own rhythm. We recommend visiting the Sunday Bazaar (if it matches the day), shopping for spices and silk, or sitting at a local teahouse to watch the world go by. You may also revisit any favourite spots in the Old City or take a taxi to nearby attractions. Overnight remains in Kashgar.

Day 13 Kashgar Departure
At an optimal time, we will transfer you to Kashgar Airport or railway station according to your departure schedule.
